A History of Drought in California: Learning From the Past, Looking to the Future

It turns slightly to the viewer’s left then and becomes The Slot as it passes through the site of the Baker Block - that long building at center-left with the three large cupolas, located on the 300 block of Main Street. In 1891 Abbot Kinney built the resort of Ocean Park, which became the center of his coastal amusement paradise, Venice of America. Easily accessible by streetcar from both Santa Monica and Los Angeles, Venice, which opened in 1905, included canals, gondolas and gondoliers, Venetian-style buildings, an amusement pier, a dancehall and an auditorium. The Los Angeles City Oil Field is a large oil field north of Downtown. Long and narrow, it extends from immediately south of Dodger Stadium west to Vermont Avenue, encompassing an area of about four miles long by a quarter mile across.

These types of five-globe streetlights (called 'Winslow' Llewellyn Electroliers) were originally installed on all streets in Downtown Los Angeles in the early 1900s, (except for Broadway which had the seven-globe lights). Today, the last of these poles are still being used as architectural features in the gardens and malls adjacent to City Hall. The Hazard and Harpham Patent Office moved to a building on the southeast corner of Fifth and Spring streets (see next photo). The Herald Examiner would move into a new, larger building in 1914, located at the southwest corner of Broadway and 11th Streets.

A fatal fungus – Fusarium wilt  – that has killed off Canary Island palms from Spain to Santa Monica has also spread to the Elysian Park trees. Faced with the prospect of a forest of dead palm trees, the Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park, a nonprofit park support group, came up with a proposal to plant disease-resistant palms. The new palms and irrigation system were paid for with a fund earmarked for Elysian Park improvements. In 1769, Gaspar de Portola and Father Juan Crespi camped on the river bank opposite Buena Vista Hill near the North Broadway Bridge entrance to Elysian Park.

The original Baltimore Hotel seen above, the two-toned building with the conical tower located on the NE corner of Olive and 7th streets, would become the future site of the Los Angeles Athletic Club (built in 1911, occupied in 1912). All viaducts are a type of bridge, but not all bridges are viaducts. The key difference between a viaduct and a bridge is that a viaduct is a long, elevated structure that carries a road or railway across a valley, gorge, or other low-lying area, while a bridge is typically used to cross a body of water. What makes the Fletcher overcrossing a viaduct and not a bridge is that it is an elevated, arched structure used to carry transportation infrastructure across a gap in the terrain, rather than over a river, lake, or other body of water. San Pedro was named for St. Peter of Alexandria, a Fourth Century bishop in Alexandria, Egypt. His feast day is November 24 on the local ecclesiastical calendar of Spain, the day on which Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered the bay in 1542 which would be known as San Pedro.

In 1899, the name of the town was formally changed to Sawtelle (for W.E. Sawtelle who superseded Taft as manager of the Pacific Land Company). Initially, the majority of vegetable selling in Los Angeles was done around the circular Olvera Street Plaza, just South of Macy Street, where Caucasian, Japanese and Chinese farmers congregated with their goods. However, the increased presence of wagons and the long hours of the makeshift vegetable market became a nuisance to the city. Echo Park was a relatively new district still sparsely settled when construction of the playground began. Its location, adjacent to but separate from an existing park, was a pattern that would be followed elsewhere, most notably with the Griffith Park Playground.

The house was commissioned by Dr. John Storer, a homeopathic physician, who was a friend of Wright’s. The house is located on a steep hillside, and Wright designed it to take advantage of the views. The house is built on a series of terraces, and the living room opens onto a large terrace with stunning views of the city. But California has often endured water scarcity throughout its history, and each occasion has brought its own challenges. Out of those challenges have come valuable lessons, and as the current dry spell becomes more severe it is worth remembering— and learning from—the state’s long history of unpredictable weather fluctuations. The colonnade, made up of dozens of Corinthian columns supporting Venetian-style arcade buildings on Windward, Pacific, and Market avenues, still serves as the gateway to the city and is one of Venice's most recognizable landmarks.

The original Venice of America canals contributed to the success of Kinney's real estate development. Lots fronting the canals became a favorite choice for owners of the local amusement concerns or out-of-town tourists looking for a place to pitch a summer cottage. Kinney dredged several miles of marshland to create the canals, which were accompanied by Italian-inspired bridges and walkways. Construction began in 1904, and by 1905, the first canals were completed. The area quickly became a popular tourist destination and residential area. In an effort to showcase the beauty of the islands,  Naples was one of the stops on the Triangle Trolley Trip excursion that began in Los Angeles.

Santa Catalina Island, named after Catherine of Alexandria, was claimed for the Spanish Empire the next day, on her feast day, November 25. In 1602–1603, SebastiĆ”n VizcaĆno (1548–1624) officially surveyed and mapped the California coastline, including San Pedro Bay, for New Spain. A skate park is planned to be built (2019) where the now empty public swimming pool is located next to the 101 Freeway onramp at Echo Park and Bellevue avenues.

Silver used the house as a private residence and as a location for several of his films, including “Lethal Weapon” and “Die Hard.” In 2006, Silver sold the house to a private buyer. Silver uses a modified design from one of the textile blocks of the Storer House for the logo of Silver Pictures. The Storer House is made of concrete blocks, which were a relatively new building material at the time. Wright used the concrete blocks to create a series of geometric patterns on the exterior of the house.

In 1781, the Pueblo of Los Angeles was officially established by Spanish California Governor Felipe de Neve with the Royal Grant of 4 square Spanish leagues (translated into 28 square miles or about 17,000 acres) of Pueblo Lands. Of this public land grant, the approximately 575-acre Elysian Park is the last remaining large piece. One of the first American official acts was the Ord Survey of 1849 to record the boundaries of these Pueblo Lands so they could be auctioned to produce city revenue. Stimson, a lumber baron turned real estate mogul who fostered commercial development in Los Angeles during the 1890s. The five-story building was designed by San Francisco architects James and Merritt Reid, who gained fame for designing the remarkable Hotel del Coronado near San Diego in 1888.

For at least 25 years after Angels Flight opened, there was an observation tower adjacent to the incline railway from which one could take in a breathtaking overlook of downtown Los Angeles. Their plans called for a tunnel 1080 feet long, with a twenty-six foot roadway and eight foot sidewalks. The building at center left was later replaced by a Buddhist temple, later the Japanese-American Museum. The building further to the left later had a very famous restaurant/cafe within. In 1900, 8,065 horses called Los Angeles home, one for every 12.7 people. Inside the city, stables, saddlers, and blacksmiths occupied prime real estate along L.A.

The patterns are both decorative and functional, as they help to shade the house from the sun. A powder room with a floating marble sink and a dining area with access to an interior courtyard are off the kitchen. Lion Canal, was renamed Windward, it stretched from the bathing lake, or lagoon past Saint Marks Island to Cabrillo Canal. The Aldebaran  Canal would later become Market Street after the canals were filled ca. The Venice Canals were originally conceived by developer Abbot Kinney in 1905 as part of his vision to create a "Venice of America" in what is now the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. Inspired by the famous canals of Venice, Italy, Kinney aimed to recreate a romantic and picturesque waterfront community.

60+ Elbow Tattoos: Designs and Ideas

tattoo elbow design

Rose elbow tattoos are a classic choice, symbolizing love, beauty, and the occasional thorn in life’s side. The elbow’s curvature lends itself to the rose’s circular shape, creating a natural flow that’s both eye-catching and symbolic. Mandala tattoos are a spiritual journey, with their intricate patterns and deep meanings. On the elbow, a mandala tattoo becomes a mesmerizing centerpiece, a whirl of designs that symbolize the universe and your place in it. It’s a piece of art that invites introspection and admiration, especially when it twists and turns with your every move. Elbow tattoos come with a backstory rich in historical and cultural significance.

Gorgeous Elbow Tattoo

As such, these tattoos often mesh well with metaphysical imagery. Some of the most prevalent body art in recent years involves mandalas. Many elbow tattoos for men also consist of Yin and Yang symbols; however, these aren’t the only complementary presentations available. For men, elbow tattoos are known to enable an unusually impressive state of creativity. This location is one of the more difficult spots to get inked, but the flawless results are worth it every time.

Black and Gray Nails Elbow Tattoo for Men

On the inside of the elbow, you have two nerves running close to the surface that can increase the pain. While the pain can be more severe, this depends on the person and their own pain tolerance. An experienced tattoo artist will reduce the pain you feel, and you can ask about applying numbing cream before your appointment to help. No matter what you choose, if you really want an elbow tattoo, don’t let the pain put you off, just make sure it isn’t your first tattoo.

Stomach California Tattoos

The choice of color also adds a sense of mystery to the ink. On the other hand, the skin makes the elbow tricky to work with. Because the skin on the elbow is usually darker, thinner, and wrinkly, tattooists must be extra careful with the coloring and after-care. It’s also important to note that tattoos on the elbow may require touch-ups over time due to the constant movement and bending of the joint.

This cool elbow tattoos idea shows a swirl of dust that forms a star tattoo surrounded by rocks and a planet. If you love astronomy, this is a great tattoo idea for you. The birth of a star is a stunning event that makes for a cool tattoo.

Outstanding Californian Tattoo Artists

This new-school dragon tattoo design is worked around the elbow point, sinuously joining the upper and lower arm. The creature’s scales are inked to look like metallic armor. White ink creates unique patterns in the scales, with burnished silver metal plates on the underneath side. Ouroboros tattoos traditionally symbolize the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The beautifully inlaid white ink highlights provide an excellent finishing touch, adding detail to the dragon’s features and horns. Mandala tattoos are rapidly becoming the go-to design choice for elbow ink, and for good reason.

Shoulder Tattoo Ideas for Men

It’s both an homage to nature and a personal talisman for growth and renewal. The compass tattoo is a beacon for those who seek direction, and when placed on the elbow, its symbolism intensifies. A compass elbow tattoo keeps you grounded, reminding you of your path every time you glance at it. It’s a favorite among travelers, adventurers, and anyone who treasures the journey just as much as the destination. First up, let’s talk about the all-seeing eye elbow tattoo.

Rose Elbow Tattoo

While getting an elbow tattoo may not be the most comfortable experience, the end result can be well worth it. Just remember to choose a skilled artist, prepare for the potential discomfort, and follow proper aftercare instructions. Avoiding the bony tip of your elbow is a great way to reduce pain during your tattoo. This cool design is a sun with rays made up of two nested triangles.

Black Ink Geometric Elbow Tattoo

tattoo elbow design

A circular shape elbow tattoos idea like this is perfect for an elbow tattoo since it frames the area. This cool elbow tattoos idea places each half of a cut dragonfruit on each side of the elbow. This is a cool effect that you could use with any fruit you like. It is easier to achieve than full realism for some artists. Be sure to ask your artist if they can create the style you are looking for and look at past examples of their work.

Traditional designs, especially those featuring skulls, attract attention effortlessly, making them a popular choice. If you’re looking for something simple and cute, you should definitely try out this bow heart elbow tattoo. This tattoo includes a black outlined pink heart that ends into a nice pink bow. The heart appears around the tip of the elbow, and there is some black ink shading done in the bow and heart to give the tattoo some depth and feature. This tattoo is subtle, and it’s the perfect elbow tattoo. So try out this cute elbow tattoo and get ready to show it off.

That part of the design is fantastic, but inking in a spider dropping down the client’s forearm from the web adds a new dimension to the overall piece. The Elven language from the Lord of the Rings is a popular tattoo design idea for lovers of the books and films. This delicate elbow tattoo is inked in the shape of a cute band-aid making for an unusual tattoo design. Some people would want to have a botanical-inspired design, such as a flower, “embrace” their whole elbow. It will appear as if the flower is blossoming when you move your arm. Choose a flower that has a prominent centre and is placed in the centre of the elbow.

9 Parking Garage Designs That Are Works of Art

parking garage design

The parking facility or lot must foremost deal with the Functional/Operational—as in providing for safe and efficient passage of the automobile and driver. This is a very complex challenge as automotive, engineering and traffic issues relative to site locations must be integrated to create the appropriate solution. Therefore designing the parking facility requires an integrated design approach of many professionals. Parking has often been reduced to the construction of the most minimal stand-alone structure or parking lot without human, aesthetic or integrative considerations.

Parking Lot Costs by Material

parking garage design

Regulations may prescribe specific materials or engineering standards for the construction of parking structures. The use of reinforced concrete and steel is common to ensure structural integrity and longevity. This ensures that the structure is built to withstand environmental factors, heavy loads, and potential seismic activity. Throughout all this change, they must still be designed to be efficient, user-friendly, durable, and cost-effective. This begins with studying and understanding the requirements of the facility’s users today and in the future.

Parking Garage Cost by Number of Levels

While areas within facilities are accommodating the safe storage of bicycles and many storage systems exist, the facility itself needs to spatially address the different needs of a bicycle driver. The smaller scale and slower speed of the bicycle, along with concentrated pedestrian traffic requires different spatial relationships and design considerations of separation of man and machine. Separate multi-story and automated bicycle facilities can be found in many places around the United States, starting on the west coast and now Millennium Park in Chicago and Union Station in Washington, D.C. As the automobile is changing so are new movement technologies appearing that will allow us to move through space in new ways.

Delhi International Airport Parking:

In a basic self-park scenario, a standard stall measures 8 foot and 6 inches. Therefore, if a car parks in the center of the space, they should have 1 foot of room on either side. When two cars park side by side, their combined gap becomes 2 feet between the vehicles. A common misconception is that the aisle width is solely based on one-way or two-way traffic.

Challenges and Considerations for Parking Structure Design in India

Parking facilities can also combine with other building types as mixed-use structures due to their very function. Aesthetically pleasing designs as well as land use, safety and ease of use can be better accommodated with a mixed-use structure. Residential and Hospital use/facility combinations typically pose the most difficult design challenges due to fire code issues. An important emerging issue is addressing fire codes as related to mixed use when combining buildings with modern facilities. Transit Villages, Smart Growth, and New Urbanist planning strategies are popular and being built in greater frequency around the county.

There are some, however, that buck the trend with downright artful designs which prompt us to rethink what role these buildings can play in our lives. Parking can be a pleasure when it's in a Brutalist masterpiece or a space whose facade features paintings of our most beloved novels. AD rounds up a selection of the strangest, most innovative, and most beautiful parking structures around the world by the likes of such luminaries as Herzog & de Meuron, Bertrand Goldberg, and more.

Legacy Place Parking Facility

The four-floor garage was part of a neighborhood redesign in the '60s, standing in front of the Smith Tower and former Seattle Hotel. At level 2 of the garage, the express ramp system transitions to a traditional double helix ramping system. The one-way double helix ramping system was chosen to accommodate the large peak loading conditions from the office patrons while providing an intuitive traffic flow. Crossovers are provided at each level which enhances the level of service over a traditional double helix system.

For every car that drives on the road, we need to find a place to put it- but are parking garages the answer? Parking garages are often seen as the antithesis of people-friendly urban planning. Large gray boxes are used solely to store cars that make temporary visits and seem like a poor use of space, especially in cities where land comes at a premium. Because of these garages, urban cores have quickly been transformed into parking districts, where vehicle storage dominates the aesthetic of a business district. Building codes only contribute to the problem, where the number of spaces is passed down as a mandate, even spreading out into suburban areas.

SJSU South Campus Parking Structure and Athletic Field

They each address the movement and storage of cars in various ways that combine residential use with many other building types. Planning for parking facilities is a complex activity that requires the collaboration of many professionals for a successful outcome. Planning for the integration of parking in the urban environment must first start with the consideration of site. Transit Villages, Smart Growth and New Urbanist planning strategies are becoming popular and are being built in greater frequency around the county. They each address the movement and storage of cars in various ways that combine residential use with many other building types and other forms of transportation.

While the number of parking spaces provided an oversell ratio of 1.15, the developer was able to design a structure with a parking ratio close to 2.0. Each project is diverse as it relates to the planning and design required by the design team and owner. By comparing and contrasting each of the projects, the functional planning and design standards are examined to provide viable takeaways that can be used for the next iteration of parking garage design. The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Car Park in Cardiff, Wales, showcases the fusion of functionality and aesthetics.

Two 60-foot clear parking modules with 2-way traffic and 90-degree parking would result in a width of 123 feet when including applicable structural members. On the other hand, two one-way bays with angled parking would be slightly less wide. When adding additional parking spaces, overall garage width would increase in increments of the established parking module or structural bay. It’s hard to believe that a party can actually create more weight than vehicles, but it’s true.

Prioritise the use of robust materials and engineering practices to guarantee structural integrity. Consider factors such as load-bearing capacity and seismic resilience for a durable and safe design. Parking facilities as large areas of paved surfaces contribute to warming trends in cities and can alter local weather patterns. The addition of solar panels sometimes simultaneously serving as shading devices or aesthetic faƧade treatments can work to address multiple concerns.

As a result, the top side of the sloped entrance to the garage operates as a portion of the off-leash dog park. The system is durable and impact-resistant, yet flexible enough to allow for creative, organic facades like this one. The mesh is made from high-performance thermoplastic that’s thermally stable from -40 to 428 degrees Fahrenheit (-40 to 120 degrees Celcius). It won’t oxidize or corrode like metal mesh, nor will it stain surrounding surfaces with rust when it rains. The mineral pigments are color-fast and the mesh also retains its tensile strength over time. The material is fully-recyclable using low-energy processes and its unique manufacturing process reduces waste by making only the amount needed for each job.

This means that to paint around 50 car spaces, you can expect to spend between $350 and $800. Most painters will use 100% acrylic water-based traffic paint to get bright, durable markings that won’t fade under traffic. Chlorinated rubber, thermal plastic, or oil-based paint may also be used, although these are not often used for car parks. This lot material is porous, eco-friendly, and lightweight, making it easy to install.
